“That Word Almost Got Me Fired!” — Lainey Wilson Admits a Country Girl Taught Her the Filthy Line That Saved Her ‘Reminders of Him’ Role

When Lainey Wilson talks, you listen — and this time, she’s got a story that’s part hilarious, part inspiring, and 100% real.

The Heart Like a Truck singer, known for her honesty and country grit, is stepping into the biggest acting challenge of her career: the upcoming 2026 Netflix adaptation of Reminders of Him, based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel. But what fans didn’t know — until now — is that one “filthy little word” almost cost her the role… and then somehow saved it.

From the Stage to the Screen

Transitioning from the concert stage to Hollywood isn’t easy, even for someone as confident as Lainey. After winning Female Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards, she was ready for something new — something raw.

“When Netflix called, I thought they had the wrong number,” Lainey laughed during a recent interview in Nashville. “I was like, ‘Y’all sure you meant to call a girl from Baskin, Louisiana, for a movie?’”

The role was Amy, a rough-around-the-edges single mother struggling to rebuild her life after tragedy — a far cry from the polished red carpets and rhinestone jackets Lainey’s fans know her for.

“I could sing pain,” she said. “But acting it — that’s a whole different kind of vulnerable.”

The Scene That Broke Her

Filming began in Atlanta last spring. According to Lainey, everything went smoothly — until one emotional scene brought production to a halt.

“I had to yell at this guy in the movie,” she recalled. “He was supposed to be my ex, and the director wanted it to feel ugly. Not polished, not controlled — real, Southern raw.”

But no matter how hard she tried, the line came out too clean, too careful.

“I grew up saying ‘yes, ma’am,’ ‘no, sir.’ I don’t cuss much, at least not on camera,” Lainey admitted. “So every time I tried to deliver that line, it sounded like a church girl pretending to be mad.”

That’s when a fellow cast member — a young actress from Alabama named Sierra Dean — stepped in with a little down-home advice.

The “Filthy Lesson” That Changed Everything

“Sierra looked at me and said, ‘Girl, you sound too nice. You gotta mean it. You gotta spit it out like your mama just found out you wrecked her truck.’”

Then Sierra whispered a single word — one Lainey swears she’d never used before — and told her to try again.

“I said it out loud, and everybody froze,” Lainey said, laughing. “The sound guy dropped his mic. The director just yelled, ‘That’s it!’”

That moment became one of the most powerful scenes in the film — a turning point for both her character and her career.

“I guess that word almost got me fired,” Lainey said. “But it also proved I could go there. It gave Amy her truth.”

The Part Netflix Tried to Cut

According to insiders, the story of the “word” was originally part of a behind-the-scenes interview Netflix filmed during production. But the segment never made it to air.

“They said it was a little too ‘raw’ for promo,” Lainey revealed with a wink. “But I think folks deserve to know how real we went for this.”

That authenticity, she believes, is what makes Reminders of Him special.

“Colleen Hoover writes about messy, broken people,” Lainey said. “And I think we all need to see that — not the perfect version, but the version that cusses when life hurts.”

A New Kind of Spotlight

Now that the film’s 2026 release is getting closer, early test audiences are already praising Lainey’s performance as “shockingly honest” and “deeply Southern.”

Director Melissa Fox told Variety, “Lainey brought something no one else could — this mix of strength, sweetness, and wildfire. That scene… it’s one of the best moments in the movie.”

Lainey’s fans — affectionately called The Bell Bottom Nation — couldn’t be prouder. Social media has exploded with support, calling her “Hollywood’s new Southern powerhouse.”

“I’m not trying to be perfect,” Lainey told fans during her recent CMA Fest set. “I just want to tell the truth — even if it takes a dirty word or two.”

A Lesson Worth Remembering

For Lainey, that one “forbidden word” has become more than a funny story — it’s a metaphor for growth.

“It’s about permission,” she said softly. “Permission to be raw, to be human, to stop worrying if people are gonna judge you for showing emotion.”

She paused, then smiled. “Sometimes, the ugliest words come from the most honest places.”

And that’s exactly what Reminders of Him — and Lainey Wilson herself — are all about: grit, heart, and the courage to be unapologetically real.
